Tips for using it

Use 8 to 15 words

Fewer than 6 words makes the multiple-choice too easy to guess, since the wrong answers come from the same list. More than 15 gets long for one sitting; split it into two quizzes.

Mix the sections

Multiple choice checks that students recognize the meaning; writing the word checks that they can recall and spell it. Using both shows who really knows the list.

Print a different version per class

Press Shuffle to reorder the questions and answers, then print again. Each version gets its own answer key.

Write short definitions

Definitions of similar length make better wrong answers. If one definition is twice as long as the rest, students will guess it.

Questions

Is the vocabulary quiz generator free?

Yes, free and unlimited with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser.

How do I enter the words?

One word per line, with a dash between the word and its definition: “candid - honest and direct”. A colon, an equals sign or a tab works too, so you can paste two columns from a spreadsheet.

Where do the wrong answers come from?

From the other definitions (or words) in your list. That keeps every option on topic, so students can't rule answers out just because they look odd.

Can I make just a multiple-choice vocabulary test?

Yes. Untick the matching and write-the-word sections and print only the multiple-choice part.

Does it work for foreign-language vocabulary?

Yes. Put the word in one language and the translation in the other: “la manzana - the apple”.

Can students take the quiz online?

This page makes printable quizzes. For an online practice quiz, paste your notes into Quiz me and it will write questions you can answer in the browser.
