Kahoot alternatives for teachers

Kahoot is great for a fast, whole-class quiz, but its free plan only fits a small group and the paid tiers add up. These are the alternatives teachers use most, and what each does better.

Blooket

Students answer questions to play mini-games such as tower defense or racing, which keeps attention longer than a straight quiz. You can import question sets from Quizlet. The free plan covers most classrooms.

Gimkit

Built by a student, Gimkit adds strategy: correct answers earn in-game money students spend on upgrades. It works best for review with older students. Several modes are limited without Pro.

Wayground (formerly Quizizz)

Quizizz renamed itself Wayground in 2025. It is the best fit for self-paced practice and homework, with detailed reports on which questions students missed. Free accounts now have a 20-resource library limit.

Quizlet Live

A team game built on Quizlet sets: students are put in random groups and must work together to match terms. Good for vocabulary review if your class already uses Quizlet.

Writing the questions is still the slow part

Every one of these tools needs good questions. Cramsmith's quiz maker drafts multiple-choice, true-or-false and short-answer questions from a reading passage or your lesson notes, with an explanation for each answer. Copy the ones you like into your game, or share the quiz link for students to practice on their own.

For younger grades, try the free printable spelling worksheets and sight word worksheets.

Questions

What is the best free alternative to Kahoot?

Blooket's free plan allows live games with up to 60 players, more than Kahoot's free plan, and has many game modes. Wayground (formerly Quizizz) is a strong free choice for self-paced quizzes and homework.

Is Quizizz still free?

Quizizz is now called Wayground. It still has a free Starter plan for teachers, but since January 2026 Starter accounts can keep only 20 resources in their library.

Can I make Kahoot questions faster?

Yes. Paste a reading or your lesson notes into an AI quiz generator to draft multiple-choice questions, then copy the ones you like into your game platform and edit them.
