4. 4x + 7 = 15
5. 8x − 20 = 12
6. 6x + 1 = 49
7. 7x + 10 = 59
8. 3x + 1 = 34
9. 2x − 17 = 7
10. 9x + 3 = 93
11. 2x − 3 = 5
12. 6x + 13 = 85
13. 3x + 10 = 40
14. 9x − 2 = 106
15. 6x + 17 = 29
16. 8x + 18 = 98
17. 4x − 3 = 29
18. 2x + 17 = 37
19. 4x − 3 = 41
20. 7x − 16 = 40

Answer key

  1. 9x − 5 = 13 → x = 2
  2. 2x − 5 = 3 → x = 4
  3. 6x + 4 = 28 → x = 4
  4. 4x + 7 = 15 → x = 2
  5. 8x − 20 = 12 → x = 4
  6. 6x + 1 = 49 → x = 8
  7. 7x + 10 = 59 → x = 7
  8. 3x + 1 = 34 → x = 11
  9. 2x − 17 = 7 → x = 12
  10. 9x + 3 = 93 → x = 10
  11. 2x − 3 = 5 → x = 4
  12. 6x + 13 = 85 → x = 12
  13. 3x + 10 = 40 → x = 10
  14. 9x − 2 = 106 → x = 12
  15. 6x + 17 = 29 → x = 2
  16. 8x + 18 = 98 → x = 10
  17. 4x − 3 = 29 → x = 8
  18. 2x + 17 = 37 → x = 10
  19. 4x − 3 = 41 → x = 11
  20. 7x − 16 = 40 → x = 8

Tips for using it

Undo in reverse order

Undo the adding or subtracting first, then the multiplying or dividing. It's the order of operations run backward.

Write both steps

Ask students to write each step on its own line, doing the same thing to both sides, so mistakes are easy to spot.

Watch the signs

Medium and Hard include negative answers and problems like 7 − 3x = −8. They're good practice for dividing by a negative.

Questions

What is a two-step equation?

An equation that takes two inverse operations to solve, like 2x + 3 = 11: subtract 3, then divide by 2, so x = 4.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, on a separate page after the problems.

Which grade is this for?

Usually 7th grade and pre-algebra, and as review in 8th grade and Algebra 1.

Is it free?

Yes, free and unlimited with no sign-up.
