Tips for using it

Add clues for vocabulary

Write each line as “word - clue” and students get a definition to work from. It turns the puzzle into vocabulary practice, not just letter shuffling.

Adjust the difficulty

For younger students, turn on the word bank or show the first letter. For older students, use longer words with no clues.

Use it as a bell-ringer

Five or six scrambled words from yesterday's lesson make a quick start-of-class review.

Questions

Is the word scramble maker free?

Yes, free and unlimited, with no sign-up. Puzzles are made in your browser.

How do I add clues?

Put each word on its own line followed by a dash and the clue, for example: “oxygen - gas released by plants”. Lines without a dash are scrambled without a clue.

Can I get a different scramble?

Yes. Click Shuffle letters to scramble every word again.

Does it work with phrases?

Yes. Each word in a phrase is scrambled separately and shown with a slash between them, so “carbon dioxide” becomes two scrambled words.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Click Print worksheet and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer.
