Answer key

  1. x − 4 = 11 → x = 15
  2. x ÷ 4 = 10 → x = 40
  3. x ÷ 2 = 2 → x = 4
  4. x − 5 = 4 → x = 9
  5. x + 3 = 17 → x = 14
  6. x − 7 = 8 → x = 15
  7. x + 2 = 11 → x = 9
  8. x + 2 = 9 → x = 7
  9. 5x = 70 → x = 14
  10. x + 2 = 17 → x = 15
  11. x ÷ 4 = 4 → x = 16
  12. x ÷ 4 = 5 → x = 20
  13. x − 7 = 1 → x = 8
  14. x ÷ 10 = 13 → x = 130
  15. x + 5 = 11 → x = 6
  16. x − 2 = 13 → x = 15
  17. x − 2 = 10 → x = 12
  18. 3x = 15 → x = 5
  19. x − 5 = 0 → x = 5
  20. 6x = 42 → x = 7

Tips for using it

Undo the operation

Each equation needs one inverse step: subtract to undo adding, divide to undo multiplying. Have students name the step before they write it.

Check by substituting

Ask students to put their answer back into the equation. If both sides match, it's right.

Then two steps

Once one-step equations are solid, move on to the two-step equations worksheet.

Questions

What is a one-step equation?

An equation you can solve with one operation, like x + 7 = 12 (subtract 7) or 4x = 28 (divide by 4).

Is there an answer key?

Yes. It prints on a separate page after the problems; untick it if you don't want it.

Which grade is this for?

One-step equations are usually taught in 6th grade, with negative numbers in 7th. Use Hard for negatives.

Is it free?

Yes, free and unlimited with no sign-up.
