Answer key

  1. mammal → B (warm-blooded animal that feeds its young milk)
  2. reptile → C (cold-blooded animal with dry, scaly skin)
  3. amphibian → F (lives in water when young and on land as an adult)
  4. bird → E (animal with feathers that lays eggs)
  5. fish → D (lives in water and breathes with gills)
  6. insect → A (small animal with six legs and three body parts)

Tips for using it

Keep it to 8–12 pairs

Long lists turn into a process of elimination. Two short matching sections test more fairly than one long one.

Write letters for older students

Writing the letter is neater to grade and works for longer definitions. Drawing lines is easier for younger children.

Shuffle for each class period

Click Shuffle definitions to print a different answer order for each class, so neighbors can't copy.

Questions

Is the matching worksheet maker free?

Yes, free and unlimited, with no sign-up.

How do I enter the pairs?

One pair per line, with a dash between the term and its match: “mammal - warm-blooded animal that feeds its young milk”. A colon or equals sign works too.

How many pairs can I use?

Up to 26, one for each letter, though 8 to 12 works best on one page.

Does it make an answer key?

Yes. The answer key lists each term with the letter of its match, on a separate page.
