What do the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis produce?
Key ideas in Unit 3
- Enzymes lower activation energy; temperature, pH and inhibitors (competitive or noncompetitive) affect their activity.
- Photosynthesis: the light reactions in the thylakoids make ATP, NADPH and O₂ (from water); the Calvin cycle in the stroma fixes CO₂.
- Cellular respiration: glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, where most ATP is made.
- Chemiosmosis: an H⁺ gradient across a membrane drives ATP synthase, and O₂ is the final electron acceptor.
- Without oxygen, fermentation regenerates NAD⁺ so glycolysis can continue.
