Key ideas in Unit 7
- At equilibrium the forward and reverse rates are equal and concentrations stay constant, not equal.
- K is products over reactants, each raised to its coefficient; pure solids and liquids are left out.
- Compare Q with K: if Q < K the reaction shifts toward products; if Q > K, toward reactants.
- Le Chatelier's principle predicts shifts after changes in concentration, pressure or volume, and temperature. Only temperature changes K.
- Ksp describes slightly soluble salts; a common ion lowers solubility.
