AP Precalculus practice test
Practice questions for the three AP Precalculus units on the exam: polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and polar functions. Answer in your browser and see the working for each answer.

| Average rate of change | (f(b) − f(a)) / (b − a), the slope of the secant line between two points. |
| End behavior of a polynomial | Set by the leading term: its degree (even or odd) and the sign of its coefficient. |
| Vertical asymptote vs. hole | A factor that cancels from numerator and denominator gives a hole; one left in the denominator gives a vertical asymptote. |
| Horizontal asymptote rules | Degree of top < bottom: y = 0. Equal degrees: ratio of leading coefficients. Top > bottom: none. |
| Multiplicity of a zero | Odd multiplicity: the graph crosses the x-axis. Even multiplicity: it touches and turns around. |
| Exponential vs. linear change | Linear: equal differences over equal intervals. Exponential: equal ratios over equal intervals. |
| Logarithm definition | log_b(x) = y means bʸ = x. |
| Log properties | log(ab) = log a + log b; log(a/b) = log a − log b; log(aⁿ) = n·log a. |
| Period of sin(bx) | 2π / |b| |
| Unit circle | The point at angle θ is (cos θ, sin θ). |
| Polar to rectangular | x = r cos θ, y = r sin θ |
| Pythagorean identity | sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 |

About the AP Precalculus exam
- Section I: 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 45 minutes, 62.5% of the score. Part A (29 questions) has no calculator; Part B (13 questions) requires a graphing calculator.
- Section II: 4 free-response questions in 70 minutes, 37.5% of the score, two with a graphing calculator and two without.
- Only Units 1–3 are tested. Unit 4 (functions involving parameters, vectors and matrices) is taught but not on the exam.
